3 Simple Steps to Grow Your Blog

When Growing Your Blog, there is a lot of information flooding the internet and determining which tact or process works best for you can be very time consuming and sometimes expensive.  Some processes work better for some bloggers while other methods perform better for separate blogging authors.  By using these three steps below, it will jump start you to cut down on your time researching and focus on the areas that really matter.  

 

While these three are not all-inclusive, it will provide you a direction in your researching and get you started that will provide you with leads while boosting your learning knowledge.  I once read that it takes over 1,680 hours to be an expert.  While you don’t have to be an expert on blogging, my goal is to shorten that many of hours so you can be successful a lot faster. Let’s get started!

 

 

Step #1  Quality Content

 

I’ll just be frank and will tell you do not publish shallow content because you will never obtain a growing followership in blogging or growth to your website.  While there is no exact number for word count, you should try to aim for 300 hundred words or more for SEO content which is described in Step #3.  For ads from Google Adsense, they usually recommend 1,500 words or more, to include other requirements.  With that stated, quality content is thoroughly explaining a topic.  If this can be done in under 500 words, then so be it but you need to avoid having a catchy title and then never really explaining what the title is encompassing.  This leaves the reader aggravated and will less likely return to your site.  

 

Another important tip is to avoid writing just to write.  You can visit websites and tell that the author has just written just reach a certain number of words but failed to provide depth.   A great resource you can use if you think you struggle in this area like I did is Amazon Alexa’s Content Writing Tips.  

 

 

You must know who you are trying to reach so that you can target this audience.  There is a reason why marketers have coined the termed “target audience” because they have realized that while you can reach a massive overall audience, it is very inefficient because only a small population will have interest.  By focusing on your target, you can attract the attention of that particular niche.  For example, my site DollarOtter, focuses on personal finance, not credit consolidation or knitting, etc.  I want to help those who struggle with debt and basic money tips so they can achieve financial freedom like I have.  If I spend all my time focusing on the masses, then it is a lot more work for very little payoff.

 

Ensure you cover the topic thoroughly but also ensure the article or blog speaks directly to the reader.  By including the words “you”, “your”, and “yours”, it makes the writing more personable and hopefully makes the reader think I am speaking directly to her or him.   

 

 

Step #2  Avoid Broken Links/Redirects

 

Nothing aggravates a reader more than to be incapsulated by an article and then recommended a product or service then clicks the link to only find a page error because the link is broken or perhaps redirected to a non-relevant source.  You could possibly lose a large portion of your audience if you tend to have a site with these issues.  A best practice and lesson learned is testing your links and ensure the links direct the reader where it needs to be.  This also has a negative impact on your SEO and will promote your website as a low-quality website.  You do not want to come across as spammy!

 

 

Step #3  Learn SEO for Growth

 

When it comes to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), there are several things you must do in order to successfully reach top search engine rankings.  Unfortunately, performing just one task for SEO isn’t enough.  Luckily though, it’s not difficult if you take it slow to learn the process.  At first SEO seemed like Greek to me, confusing and a language I was not comprehending.  Once, I took the time to learn the process and its benefits, I saw drastic increases in my website. 

 

 

The first checklist item is to analyze your keywords reflected on your website.  Whether you use Wix, WordPress, or Blogger, these sites have an SEO tab to reflect what keywords you are currently using.  Once you determine what is being reflected, conduct a keyword research to gain insight into how you are attracting your visitors and where you are currently ranked.  Some great resources on this are Alexa’s Keyword Difficulty Tool and Google’s Keyword Planner. 

 

 

One common mistake that website owners make when establishing keywords is the creation of keywords for each page within your website.  Mainly new bloggers or site creators will establish keywords for their homepage, yet neglect to assign keywords for all pages. This will optimize your pages and boost your site visits.  Another mistake is assigning the same keywords to all pages which is known as keyword cannibalization and is portrayed very negative.  Each page is unique and therefore, you need to assign different keywords to different pages. 

 

Let us shift gears to creating SEO friendly URL.  This is an area where I too have made mistakes but we learn as we grow.  You must have a well structured and organized URL.  For instance, www.dollarotter.com/blog, is very clear where this is directing you. 

 

Don’t have a confusing URL (which you can assign) such as one of my older posts: https://www.dollarotter.com/blank-2/2018/02/25/Compound-Interest-Friend-or-Foe

 

While it is confusing, put your self into the shoes of your visitors.  They want a link to trust and won’t lead them astray.  If you happen to have a link that is long, you can shorten using a site called Tinyurl.  I use this site quite often to shorten links for twitter and other social media outlets.

Tech companies are always changing their SEO algorithms so these are just a few items above that you must monitor and update to ensure fresh keywords are reaching your site.
